Components

Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS)

-Students research current and future trends of a specific topic
-Students analyze and apply the six-step problem solving process to a short story (future scene) related to the topic
-Students record their work in a booklet or online form
-Trained evaluators score the students’ work and give feedback
-Students can work in teams of 4 or as individuals
-Up to 5 topics are explored each year

FREELANCE EVALUATION:
-Specifically for new coaches and teams
-Booklets are submitted electronically for feedback only
-Evaluator comments provide coaching for teams

Four divisions are offered: Junior (grades 4-6), Middle (grades 7-9), Senior (grades 10-12), and Adult.

Community Problem Solving (CmPS)

-Students identify and research a real issue in their community
-Students apply the six-step problem solving process to develop an action plan to address the issue
-Students implement their action plan in the community
-Projects are scored competitively at the affiliate (state) level
-Students can work in teams of any number or as individuals
-One issue is tackled until completed in one or two years

Three divisions are offered: Junior (grades 4-6), Middle (grades 7-9), and Senior (grades 10-12).

Scenario Writing (SW)

-Students select and research one of the topics for the year
-Students use the six-step problem solving process to develop the plot and resolution of their own scenario
-Students write their scenario as a short futuristic story
-Students submit their completed scenario for competition at the affiliate (state) level as a written or oral piece
-Scenarios are written by individual students – there is no team option
-Trained evaluators score the submitted scenarios
-One scenario is written each year

Three divisions are offered: Junior (grades 4-6), Middle (grades 7-9), and Senior (grades 10-12).

The top five scenarios from each division in the Future Problem Solving Program International Scenario Writing Competition, plus the winning Junior, Middle, and Senior Division Scenario Writing Team Champions are included in the Scenario Writer Champions Book. -Students select and research one of the topics for the year
-Students use the six-step problem solving process to develop a plot and resolution for their futuristic story
-Students use oral storytelling techniques to present their story
-Storytelling performances are submitted digitally
-Trained evaluators score the submitted performances
-One story is submitted each year
